My Own Worst Enemy
aaaarrrrrgggghhh.
Where to begin? My absolute hands down worst of all time client was a woman who wanted a complete identity system for her new company, a consultancy. I had known her for a long time, so I didn’t think a formal contract was needed, and felt that since we had known each other, communication would be a snap.
Turns out she was incredibly picky. Didn’t like ANYTHING, said things like “no, that’s stupid and cheesy”, “what are you thinking!” and my all-time favorite: “maybe you should give your Art Center degree back. You’re just not getting it right.”
After input on her project from several other competent and skilled designers who LIKED what I did, she finally and begrudgingly accepted one option, but was obviously unsatisfied. I had also, up to this point, not been paid anything, and she began to bother me so much to the point that it seeped into time for other projects. She bothered me day and night; no respect for personal time or boundaries, and no limits to harsh comments.
She chose a logo because she had to, she was out of time. It wasn’t until she started passing out her cards, (with “This is all I have…”) did she begin to like the design, because she got such a positive response to the design and creativity.
She rode me like a donkey, stiffed me, and I’ll NEVER work for her again. NOT ONCE did she ever say “Thank you”.
Who was she?
Me. and I’m still not speaking to her because of it.
