I had a “movie producer” client who wanted me to edit his 2 hour video into 10 minute segments for uploading to Youtube.com. I spent a few hours digitizing the footage and editing it with titles, etc.
Then I spent about an hour outputing the files to fit Youtube’s format specs. The files were really big, so I had to find a codex that compressed the file size small enough, while keeping the resolution quality as good as possible. As I failed to achieve an optimum result after several attempts, the client started to get impatient. I told him that I will try a few more times, and we would just have to use the best codex setting. I explained to him that we needed to work within the limits of the Youtube format. But he said that the files needed to be super hi-res quality, and if I couldn’t meet his demand he wanted me to return his $100. down-payment. I told him that wasn’t going to happen. Then he suddenly flipped out, and said he was going to “kick my ass”. I picked up the phone and called 911, and he knocked the phone out of my hand, on to the floor and it broke. I retreated into another room, and he followed me. I tried to calm him down, to no avail.
(I never play into the game where someone gets mad in order to get their way). So the police arrive and they listen to our story about what happened. Then they escorted him out, red-faced. I kept the $100. and he got nothing.

I have a question about intellectual property, if a client uses a logo and doesn’t pay for it, after stealing it from a proposal what can i do about that?

That’s not so bad. I had a client who attacked me in my office because I couldn’t compress his video that I edited to Youtube’s format (it wasn’t my fault the file was too big). I spent 3 hours on the project, so I would not return the $100. down-payment. He flipped out, and I had to call 911. The police promptly escorted him out.

Oh my goodness, this is such a sad story. I have a life-long friend who lives outside of Wartburg, TN, so I know from stories how bad scenarios can get there- not because the people there are “bad”, but because it is just so isolated in some situations. People there still rely upon one another, so the rule of “let it be” still exists for pragmatic reasons- and some people choose to exploit that.
I feel that doing something that requires both your sensibilities and your intellect for someone ruthless really puts you in a vulnerable position. I am glad that you sound Ok now, and hope that things get better for you and your family.

Umm….hello? Contract? This is the A-#1 reason why we don’t work without contracts.I feel sorry for you and am not excusing what that lady did in the least – she was wrong- but much of this could have been avoided with a contract.

This is without a doubt, the worst client I have ever heard of! I mean, throwing something at someone is nuts! I would have walked a LONG time before it got to that!
